Happy World Photography Day and Happy World Photography Week (August 19-26)!
We’ve been trying to capture the moonrise over the Hotel Del from this distance for a few years now, but the weather on Coronado Island just hasn’t been cooperative. Last week, the clouds and marine layer still looked discouraging, but we showed up anyway. It was exhilarating to finally see the Full Sturgeon Moon break through perfectly between the cupolas, then behind the flag. The thrill of a successful chase!
The historic Hotel Del Coronado has had an impressive list of guests, including Thomas Edison, Marilyn Monroe, John F. Kennedy, Barbra Streisand, and Barack Obama. The hotel reminds me of Emerald City. Coincidentally, Author L. Frank Baum wrote parts of the “Wizard of Oz” here. At least a dozen films have been shot at this location. Open since 1888, it’s one of the few wooden Victorian beach resorts left in the U.S.
